A View from Jamestown

May 29, 2014

I've been a slacker lately, getting distracted and not doing the one thing a photographer is supposed to do:  take photographs.  So one afternoon after some rain moved out, the sun was peaking out from beneath the cloud cover and suddenly a sunset shoot looked like a promising venture!  I've explored lots of coastline in South County, but I hadn't been exploring much of the Jamestown coastline next door.  There have been a few places on my to-shoot list:  East Ferry, Ft. Weatherhill cliffs, Dutch Harbor... But with the clouds towards the west I thought a western facing shot would probably pan out best for dramatic color.

I was half right.  I did experience some wonderful color but there was also substantial cloud cover behind me on the western side of the island moving so slowly that it was still hanging around for sunset and lit up like a fireball as the sun dropped.  So, I got half the color the sky experienced that afternoon but it wasn't a total loss.  I was at the beach just near East Ferry and I captured a view looking east towards Newport.  I took several frames, but I think the panoramic is my favorite!

Board Portraits // Experiments

I've been wanting to shoot more portraits lately, but in combination with the surf community that I've been so involved with the past year.  My good friend, Kevin Tanner, behind Soudnings Surf Co creates some gorgeous handcrafted boards.  He does all his own shaping, resin work, and glassing, and I wanted to photograph some beautiful boards to highlight his craftsmanship as well as portraits of my friends who ride them.  I decided to do board portraits.

A lot of us enjoy the warm weather, but a select few of us still enjoy (or perhaps tolerate) the cold weather.  And nothing quite says winter like a fresh snowfall!  On the rare occasion Rhode Island experiences more than one inch of snow while there's swell in the water, you can find a select few of dedicated riders on the shore eager to have a snow session.

Winter Aerials

Some days I just don't feel like swimming.  Some days I don't feel like shooting with a 7lb telephoto setup on the beach.  Those days are perfectly suited for drone shots, should the wind be accommodating enough.

I've only had a couple drone flights this winter, one during a sunny but cold morning at the beach, and a second during a slightly windier day at Point Judith lighthouse. It's always a refreshing perspective!
