Cold won't stop us!

Cold won't stop us!

Just because the summer temperatures are gone does not mean a lack of activity out on the water!  If it's a breezy day, no matter what the season, chances are you can see some of the locals out on the water either for frostbite sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, you name it.  There's even ice sailors once those ponds freeze over!  It was gorgeous autumn weather this weekend, and I took the trip to the beach to take pictures of some kite surfers.  I counted three going back and forth for a couple hours. I also got to try out my new lens for the first time, and there is a reason the Nikon 70-200mm VRII is one of the king Nikkor lenses!  It was a dream to work with, and on my Nikon D80 is was an effective 100-300mm lens.  Here's three shots from the day!

I've been wanting to shoot more portraits lately, but in combination with the surf community that I've been so involved with the past year.  My good friend, Kevin Tanner, behind Soudnings Surf Co creates some gorgeous handcrafted boards.  He does all his own shaping, resin work, and glassing, and I wanted to photograph some beautiful boards to highlight his craftsmanship as well as portraits of my friends who ride them.  I decided to do board portraits.

Some days I just don't feel like swimming.  Some days I don't feel like shooting with a 7lb telephoto setup on the beach.  Those days are perfectly suited for drone shots, should the wind be accommodating enough.

I've only had a couple drone flights this winter, one during a sunny but cold morning at the beach, and a second during a slightly windier day at Point Judith lighthouse. It's always a refreshing perspective!
