Foggy Matunuck, and Some Surf

Foggy Matunuck, and Some Surf

May 30, 2012

Spent the last week down in Matunuck as friends were moving out of their rentals and the summer residents began moving back in.  It was mostly to give myself a bit of a break from the number of projects I've taken on recently, sit out on the front lawn with my boyfriend, get some sun, and prepare for the summer months.  I still brought my camera (of course), and went to sit on the beach one late afternoon as fog rolled in and the air quickly cooled.  There was a bit of swell and of course some surfers out on the water to greet it!  I also was playing around with my newest lens, the Nikkor 16-35mm VR, and just enjoying the beach.  I grabbed a few shots I wanted to share and hope you all enjoy them as well!

Oh, and by the way, had a surf lesson down at Narragansett Beach on Sunday and it was a blast!  It wasn't my first time out on a board, third time actually, but it'd been about 6 years since I gave it a try so I figured I was overdue.  There wasn't much surf on Sunday, but enough to give my classmate and I a workout!  Hour and a half of constant paddling out, small surf in, paddling out, small surf in...  Ton of thanks to my awesome instructor Conrad, and my cheering squad, aka the 12-or-so-year-old-girl out surfing too :).  It was a whole lot of fun and I definitely plan on doing it again!  And of course it brings newfound appreciation and admiration for all of the talented guys I'm trying to snap pictures of out on the water.

Warm Getaways

I had been eagerly awaiting this winter season.  Here in New England, the winter months can be rather frigid, but for those of us who don’t mind the exhaustive work of climbing into 6 mil wetsuits or ice-cream-headache cold waters, it’s the eagerly anticipated winter months that bring the biggest swells.  We had snow before the New Year and water temps quickly started approaching 40°F.  But in typical fashion, as soon as the long awaited winter months arrived, I was craving a break from the cold gray in favor of a warm water reprieve.

Board Portraits // Experiments
Board Portraits // Experiments

April 30, 2019

I've been wanting to shoot more portraits lately, but in combination with the surf community that I've been so involved with the past year.  My good friend, Kevin Tanner, behind Soudnings Surf Co creates some gorgeous handcrafted boards.  He does all his own shaping, resin work, and glassing, and I wanted to photograph some beautiful boards to highlight his craftsmanship as well as portraits of my friends who ride them.  I decided to do board portraits.

Snowy Surf Sessions
Snowy Surf Sessions

March 26, 2019

A lot of us enjoy the warm weather, but a select few of us still enjoy (or perhaps tolerate) the cold weather.  And nothing quite says winter like a fresh snowfall!  On the rare occasion Rhode Island experiences more than one inch of snow while there's swell in the water, you can find a select few of dedicated riders on the shore eager to have a snow session.
