J Class in Newport

J Class in Newport

June 22, 2011

Hey everyone I hope summer has been in full swing for everyone because it's definitely been a busy start to the season here in RI!  Thinking I need to start a nautical/coastal portfolio so I went out shooting the J Class boats match racing in Newport last week!  I only got a chance to shoot from land, but here are some images I took from Castle Hill and Weatherhill.  Right now I'm just in a phase trying to get comfortable shooting on the water and shooting boats.  But here's some of my shots from the races, enjoy!

And I also went down into Wickford for the first Tuesday Night Summer Concert.  Although I didn't really get any good shots of the crowd or the band, I decided to do some downtown dusk shooting!

I've been wanting to shoot more portraits lately, but in combination with the surf community that I've been so involved with the past year.  My good friend, Kevin Tanner, behind Soudnings Surf Co creates some gorgeous handcrafted boards.  He does all his own shaping, resin work, and glassing, and I wanted to photograph some beautiful boards to highlight his craftsmanship as well as portraits of my friends who ride them.  I decided to do board portraits.

Some days I just don't feel like swimming.  Some days I don't feel like shooting with a 7lb telephoto setup on the beach.  Those days are perfectly suited for drone shots, should the wind be accommodating enough.

I've only had a couple drone flights this winter, one during a sunny but cold morning at the beach, and a second during a slightly windier day at Point Judith lighthouse. It's always a refreshing perspective!
