Conditions could not have been more perfect! The sun was shining, the weather was comfortably warm, the seabreeze was cool and constant, and everyone was out for a fun day of sailing. It was the second day of racing for the Newport Regatta, hosted annually by Sail Newport as the premiere mid-season One Design racing event all in the name of good fun sailing. Competitors come from all over New England, the eastern seaboard, plus a few from across the country and even Europe to compete in one of the most fun events of the season.
While I raced in this regatta back in junior sailing, competing in the Laser Radial class when the regatta was sponsored by Volkswagen, I photographed the dinghy circles for the first time last year. This year I covered Division One, one of the big boat circles including the gorgeous Swan 42s, the sporty J24s, and the performance Melges 20s and J70s. Set up from a big and beautiful 40' trawler working as the signal boat, I captured some great shots of the racing both at the start and finish. Boats were sailing a Windward/Leeward twice around with a leeward gate, and the first leg was over a mile long just offshore from Brenton Point.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the water this year and hope to cover this circle, plus the dinghy circles, over the course of multiple days for next year's event. A special thanks to Sail Newport for continually helping me get on the water and for putting on such wonderful events!
