Volvo Ocean Race '17-'18

It's been a cool and rainy past couple of weekends over in Newport, but I was onsite at Fort Adams to celebrate the Volvo Ocean Race Newport stopover and Leg 9 Restart!

These one design Volvo 65s have been sailing around the world in a one-of-a-kind race that is the pinnacle for many performance sailors.  The race happens every 3 years and pushes the limits of endurance and adventure sailing.  All the boats are exactly the same, so the difference only comes from the sailors themselves, their skills, competitive spirit, and teamwork.  There are 7 teams competing this go-around, with the American lead team captained by Charlie Enright from right here on Narragansett Bay.  The teams have already completed two legs through the infamous Southern Ocean, and racing has sadly claimed the life of team member Josh Fisher from Sun Hung Kai Scallywag this year.

Sunday was the start for leg 9 of 11, as the boats sail from Newport to Cardiff, Wales.  It started out breezy and cloudy, but as racing began the sun made a surprise appearance to help with the celebration!  The Volvos started just off Fort Adams, raced to a windward gate by Castle Hill, back down to a set mark off Goat Island, around Rose Island to the leeward mark, and then out to sea with the finish line far across the Atlantic Ocean.

I was out on a media boat to capture the action as these world class sailors jockeyed for position across Newport Harbor.

Best of luck and fair sailing to all the teams!
