Holgas: Newport Bermuda

For anyone who follows me on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/catebrownphoto), I recently promised a glimpse into the world of Holga since I got film back from the developers.  Two rolls of black and white (one that had been sitting around for about a month), and three rolls of color.  I have to say having the America's Cup in town thoroughly directed my full attention and focus over the past week, but now that that action has subsided I have been able to revert my gaze back to my film.

I'm still experimenting with this little plastic camera, and recently took off the mask inside the camera, which creates a perfectly crisp frame edge for each shot.  Taking it off allows you to utilize the camera for panoramics, and make it more vulnerable to heavy vignettes and light-leaks, some of the unpredictable lomo qualities that made the Holga so popular.  I'm not 100% sure if I'm happy with the light leaks on the color film, since it's a smear of purplish-pink across the film, not just a cool bright spot.  But I will continue to experiment and find the aesthetic I like best with this camera.

Back in mid June for the Newport Bermuda start (which seems so long ago now), I tried out this camera with color film for the first time.  I used Kodak Ektar 100 which I heard was an all around great film with very fine grain.  I don't know if it was the light leaks or just color balance of the film, but I felt about 80% of my film had a heavy blue color cast.  Perhaps replacing the mask and preventing the heavy light leaks will change that?  Only trial and error will tell!  But here's some photos from the sail over to Newport, the Newport to Bermuda start, and the sail back.  Enjoy!
