Sailing Heritage

Newport is a living landmark in nautical history, teaming with salty souls.  The city's roots reach back to 1639 and has long been a sailing icon of the world.  Multiple Newport companies offer sailing charters and daysails, including 12 Meter Charters which hosts a fleet of five 12 Meters plus a handful of other classic yachts.  I went for a sail this summer aboard the sleek and iconic Heritage, a 12 Meter which fought for the America's Cup in 1970.  It was built, financed and skippered by Charley Morgan and only competed in the one America's Cup event before sailing the oceans and eventually becoming part of the 12 Meter Charters fleet.

The Heritage crew could not have been more personable or accommodating during this mid-summer sail through Newport Harbor.  The sun was shining, the air was cool with the steady ocean breeze, and the conditions could not have been more perfect for a late afternoon cruise.  The guests on this day in particular consisted mostly of a family taking their 102 year old mother out for a sail as a birthday present.  This little lady was full of spunk and even skippered the tall boat under the Newport Bridge.

It was a wonderful evening and I can't wait to join 12 Meter Charters for another sail!  See all the shots in the Viewing Gallery
