WSA Race Photos Up and Running

This past Sunday was a fundraising event for Wickford Sailing Assocation, the Quonset Point 10 Miler.  This was the first year a 5K course was also offered to registrants.  There was a great diversity of runners, even one of my former sailing students who is about 9 years old did the 5K!  Luckily the rain held off and it was just a chillier overcast day.  The race started at 10am, and two runners promptly put themselves in the forefront, seemingly sprinting for the entire 10 miler.  The top finisher completed the whole 10 miles in 52:38, with second place coming in at 53:19.  It was pretty impressive to watch, I give a lot of credit to endurance runners!  The man who won the 5K completed the course in 18:41, with a pace of 6 minutes!  Last time I ran a mile was back in middle school and I'm pretty sure I only broke the 8 minute one out of three times...

I used my Tamron 24-135 lens at the start and quickly hopped in the car to meet the runners around mile 2.  I switched to my new Nikon 70-200mm VRII and clicked away!  My poor camera body is getting up there in years and struggled to keep up with the fast shutter bursts I was demanding, but it performed very well for our first road race!  Because of the cloudy conditions I had to shoot at a much higher ISO than my preferred 200.  And after the first 10 minutes or so I switched to manual settings, shooting at a 1/250th and about f9.  I'm pretty happy with the results, but sadly didn't capture images of every participant.  Due to the 5K AND a 10 Mile course, I had to be in about 5 places at once, and I was constantly driving to different course locations.  I scoped out several good spots for shooting before the race and only stopped to shoot about about 6 out of 10 of them.  Hopefully everyone at the race had a good time, I know I did!
