2013 in Photographs

January 02, 2014

Another year in the books.  2013 started out with surf, snow and seascapes, which moved into spring flowers, high school sailing and Wickford Regatta in May.  The summer was full of activity from the Sail Newport Youth Challenge kicking off the summer sailing season in June, to the junior sailors, beercan racers, and Newport Regatta among other events.  The summer drew to a close with a cruise through the Elizabeth Islands, NBYA Race Week, Bullseye Nationals, and a trip to Block Island.  October saw my first attempts at water panning as I shot more surf and seascapes, closing out the sailing season with a chilly college event, the ICSA Singlehanded Championship in November.  And these last few weeks have seen new winter seascape photography as I've experimented with my new filter.  Here are some of my favorites from the entire calendar year.  I can only hope that 2014 will bring as many great photographic opportunities!  Happy New Years everyone!

Board Portraits // Experiments
Board Portraits // Experiments

I've been wanting to shoot more portraits lately, but in combination with the surf community that I've been so involved with the past year.  My good friend, Kevin Tanner, behind Soudnings Surf Co creates some gorgeous handcrafted boards.  He does all his own shaping, resin work, and glassing, and I wanted to photograph some beautiful boards to highlight his craftsmanship as well as portraits of my friends who ride them.  I decided to do board portraits.

A lot of us enjoy the warm weather, but a select few of us still enjoy (or perhaps tolerate) the cold weather.  And nothing quite says winter like a fresh snowfall!  On the rare occasion Rhode Island experiences more than one inch of snow while there's swell in the water, you can find a select few of dedicated riders on the shore eager to have a snow session.

Winter Aerials
Winter Aerials

Some days I just don't feel like swimming.  Some days I don't feel like shooting with a 7lb telephoto setup on the beach.  Those days are perfectly suited for drone shots, should the wind be accommodating enough.

I've only had a couple drone flights this winter, one during a sunny but cold morning at the beach, and a second during a slightly windier day at Point Judith lighthouse. It's always a refreshing perspective!
