Bullseye Nationals

October 01, 2013

So at the beginning of September I was invited to shoot the Bullseye National Regatta hosted out of Saunderstown Yacht Club here on Narragansett Bay.  Bullseyes are the fiberglass equivalent of the Herreshoff 12 1/2, wonderful little daysailers with a competitive edge.

After some rainy weather, the sky cleared up for a wonderfully warm and sunny weekend of sailing!  It was most likely the last truly summery days of the season and we were all so happy to be out on the water.  Competitors came from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and even one from the midwest to compete in this friendly competition of 17 boats.  After a weekend of sailing and socializing, the regatta winner was the Collins family, proudly representing their home & host yacht club, SYC!

I've been wanting to shoot more portraits lately, but in combination with the surf community that I've been so involved with the past year.  My good friend, Kevin Tanner, behind Soudnings Surf Co creates some gorgeous handcrafted boards.  He does all his own shaping, resin work, and glassing, and I wanted to photograph some beautiful boards to highlight his craftsmanship as well as portraits of my friends who ride them.  I decided to do board portraits.

A lot of us enjoy the warm weather, but a select few of us still enjoy (or perhaps tolerate) the cold weather.  And nothing quite says winter like a fresh snowfall!  On the rare occasion Rhode Island experiences more than one inch of snow while there's swell in the water, you can find a select few of dedicated riders on the shore eager to have a snow session.

Winter Aerials

Some days I just don't feel like swimming.  Some days I don't feel like shooting with a 7lb telephoto setup on the beach.  Those days are perfectly suited for drone shots, should the wind be accommodating enough.

I've only had a couple drone flights this winter, one during a sunny but cold morning at the beach, and a second during a slightly windier day at Point Judith lighthouse. It's always a refreshing perspective!
