Some days I just don't feel like swimming. Some days I don't feel like shooting with a 7lb telephoto setup on the beach. Those days are perfectly suited for drone shots, should the wind be accommodating enough. I've only had a couple drone flights this winter, one during a sunny but cold morning at the beach, and a second during a slightly windier day at Point Judith lighthouse. Before the holidays truly kicked in, I took a weekend trip up to Maine to visit with some friends. But in true photographer fashion, I had to bring my cameras and find time on the drive up and back to do some photographing. It was on the drive back when the sun was out, the wind was low, and I made several stops to explore the coastline and take a drone flight.
Happy Holidays! It's the week of Christmas, and I feel like I'm still catching up from a busy season of late summer surf and fall travel. Right before I left for Ireland there were back to back swells that just seemed too perfect to pass up. It was mostly knee high or die, and I was out there swimming at golden hour with friends for two of my favorite sessions of the whole season! Plus a day of 75° and sunny in late September left us all thinking back to last year's incredible Indian Summer.
I've been looking for a new creative exploration regarding my aerial work and/or seascapes. When I realized you could put a Neutral Density filter on a drone, it all came together, and I quickly found myself exploring long exposures from the air in a new series that I'm calling "Salt + Sky".
